Unusual, thoughtful, and heartbreakingly beautiful book.
The book is a drugies look back on the cost and pain of addiction. As tragic as it is; the silver lining shines through from a spirt that wouldn't sink. Moving and artful in it's delivery. You would have to be a very hard case to not be touched.
A raw and intense account of the horrors of drug addiction and one artist who found the strength to pull himself out. David's words rip into one's soul. They are brutal and honest. One can feel the agony, rejection and hopelessness that he felt over and over again, yet somehow he hung on, and found a way out. It's a story of hope against all odds, the strength to survive and get clean - a strength fueled by the birth of his son, James. David is a true poet who bared his soul and turned his pain into a beautiful book, a Happy Ending. A must read!
"Happy Ending" is like no other book I've ever read. The unique style of writing only adds to the reader's ability to really 'feel' the pain, anguish and despair in David's decent into the dark pit of addiction. Each page is written straight from the heart with such candid unfiltered honesty. David journeys a long and winding road, experiencing the very best and worst parts of the human condition in himself and in the people he crosses paths with throughout his life. His story is a validation that love and the will of the human spirit can overcome the worst and most controlling obstacles in life.
Everything starts out beautiful, the lies, the loves, the torment as it fades away to languor when the needle pricks. As poetry, quick and sexual in its presentation, David captures the feel of what it's like to fall away from life and climb out of the abyss when there really isn't any reason to. He has mastered despair in a way only a writer can and speaks for all of those left on the streets to wither.
Happy Ending is a journey through addiction and redemption told beautifully with vivid imagery and candid realness. You find yourself rooting for David from page one. His words jump off the page and grasp at your heart strings. But he also makes you laugh out loud with his ironic sense of humor and descriptive view of the world. There is beauty in tragedy, light in dark. And you see that when the world says give up, hope whispers try one more time and David does that pouring his heart out to his son in the last pages. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Would highly recommend!
Have you ever witnessed a man descend into madness? Shhh...wait, don't answer yet! Doctor Rat gets as close to the edge of madness as possible in Happy Ending without being completely consumed. Instead, he took what was left to find of his heart and let it pour onto every page. Maybe it was the first healthy move he made. I don't know, but I'd like to think so, He'd probably tell you he started by laying off the junk so he could save the animals, and he'd be right. Today, David is living a happy and content life in Brazil where he gets to delight the local children as an English teacher and local Rock Star. This year he dressed up as Santa Claus and had a blast making a huge difference for everyone in his community. I even saw him smile. But why should you buy this book? Because all of the proceeds go to David's son James' college fund so the next generation can have a better life.
